Our Most Frequently Asked Questions

Which is best, black and white or color systems?
This depends on your needs. Black and white systems generally have a higher resolution for exceptional image quality. They also see better in low light applications. Color systems are ideal for environments where customers are present. Color video allows you to give better details to police such as shirt and pants color. Use black and white systems to monitor warehouse employees, rooms that should be void of people or watching parking lots and back doors at night.

What is the best camera you have?
The best camera we have depends upon your needs here as well. Each of the cameras have unique features that sets it apart from the rest. Some have audio capability and some have night vision. Some have both. Some are vandal resistant, while others are weather resistant. If you’re confused about which camera is right for you, please call our friendly customer service reps for help.

Can I just use a standard VCR?
Yes, however it doesn’t provide some important features that come with security recorders. Time and date stamping, alarm recording, multiplex recording, and  time lapse recording are all features that may not accompany normal VCRs.

What is the difference between a VHS security recorder and a digital video recorder (DVR)?
A VHS security recorder (also called a time lapse recorder) wit a T-120 VHS tape can record up to 960 hrs of video. A DVR stores video on a hard drive (like your computer) which can provide longer recording. The larger the hard drive the more video you can store. Since the recording on a DVR is internal, your security system is far more tamper resistant than a time lapse recorder. Plus, there are no tapes to rotate with a DVR.

What is multiplexing?
A multiplexer can accept individual camera feeds (up to 16 in many multiplexers) and then output the video to your monitor or to a recording device or both. With a multiplexer, you can record the video feeds individually allowing you to have full size images on play back. You will need a multiplexer if you intend to use more than 8 cameras with our monitors.

What is the maximum distance for the RJ11E cable?
1200 feet, however beyond 500 feet a line amplifier may be required.

Will telephone extension cable work in place of RJ11E cable?
No. Our RJ11-E cable is proprietary. Normal RJ11 cable doesn’t include the capability to send power over it for the cameras.

Can I use an indoor camera outdoors?
Yes, but its not recommended with the proper housing accessory.  Indoor cameras aren't sealed to keep out the elements(such as rain or dust).  This may cause the camera to malfunction and the warranty on camera would be voided.

How do I avoid a glare from sunlight on the camera?
Re-mount the camera in a different position or provide a shield to block the sunlight from camera.
